Mumbai, India, January 24, 2018: The Aerospace & Defence MRO South Asia Summit which was held from 18-19 January 2018 succeeded in fulfilling its objectives. This summit is the first ever event for the MRO industry, in the wake of the government initiative, ‘Make in India’ policy and the number of other policy initiatives announced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. The aim of the event was to assess the opportunities and challenges confronting the Aviation MRO industry in India.

The two-day summit attracted some of the best minds in the industry both from the civil and defence sectors, like  Dr. Dinesh Keskar, SVP, Boeing Commercial Airplanes; Ashish Saraf, VP & Make in India Officer, Airbus; Kishore Jayaraman, President, India and South Asia, Rolls Royce; Air Marshal JN Burma, (Retd.), Indian Air Force; Air Marshal Sukhchain Singh, (Retd.); Bharat Malkani,  Chairman & Managing Director, Max Aerospace; Gaurav Dhanda, Deputy  Commissioner, Customs, CBEC, SWIFT; Rahul Shah, SVP Strategic growth & Business Development, AAR Corp.; M. Balakrishnan, Consultant, Air India Engineering Services Ltd.; Shaji Karunakaran, Chief Engineering, Blue Dart Aviation; and the like. The summit succeeded in touching upon a wide range of issues like the magnitude of the opportunity as well the hurdles impeding the realisation of these opportunities. It is noteworthy that the Summit was attended by as many as three Air Marshals.

India accounts for 5 percent of the total world demand reflects enormous growth of Indian Aviation market which, in turn would reflect on the MRO prospects. While this is the case in the Indian civil aviation sector, the defence aviation sector also is growing by leaps and bounds necessitating increasing demand for MRO. The Government, on its part, had initiated a number of steps to meet this increasing demand.

The Summit helped identify the challenges as inadequate infrastructure, problems in land acquisition, the higher duties on spare part etc. The words of Dr. Keskar put the result of the Summit in a nutshell, “The market is here, the growth is here and people (skilled workforce) are here. This opportunity in MRO should be tapped in time.” The success of this summit would spur wide participation in the next event, bigger in scale and scope.
